CSX 938 leads a UP ethanol train south at the north end of the Joint Line on Main 2. The train is crossing underneath of the RTD W-Line. This is the Light Rail line that runs from Denver Union Station out to the Jefferson County Courthouse. In the background, you can see the top of Empower Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos.

The track the unit ethanol train is on (led by three CSX units and a CP unit) is on UP's Main 2. Main 1 is off to the left. The other tracks in the shots are BNSF-owned and are not CTC here. They are yard tracks at the south end of Rennicks Yard. The ethanol train came to Colorado across the KP and is headed for NA Jct southeast of Pueblo. The sun is just barely cresting the horizon to the east.

Minutes before the sun peeks over the horizon, a southbound UP unit ethanol train is on UP's Main 2 between Fox Jct and Prospect Jct, alongside the south end of BNSF's Rennicks (intermodal) Yard. Three CSX units and a Canadian Pacific unit lead the train south.

At CP DS001 (Fox Jct), at the very east end of the Moffat Tunnel Sub, a unit UP ethanol train (with some foreign visitors for power) leads the train toward the Joint Line. The train came off the Belt Industrial Lead, running through North Yard on Track 1. It is now leaving the yard and entering Main 2 down to Propsect Jct where it will head south.

A CSX AC4400CW brings up the tail end of the Provo-Denver. The paint is looking very clean and sharp on the unit. A very quick way to identify this as a unit with AC traction motors is to look on the cab. The lightning bolt beneath the number indicates this is an AC unit. This particular unit went west of the Moffat a few days ago as DPU on the tail end of a loaded coal train headed for Valmy, NV.

CSX 410, an AC4400CW, sits idling on the ready track in North Yard. The ready track is where units that have been fueled and are ready for assignment are kept until such an assignment is available.

A somewhat interesting trio of GEs (a BNSF ET44C4, a CSX AC4400CW, and a BNSF ES44AC) lead BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest. The train is currently stopped in the siding at Rocky. The train has no crew at the moment. A crew will show up to take the train in to Denver, but it could be anywhere from 4 to 24 hours before the crew actually appears.

Of all the Class 1 railroads, CSX is probably the (US-based) Class 1 I've taken the fewest shots of. While no eastern railroad is particularly common in Colorado, CSX seems to be exceptionally rare in the Centennial State. Here, a CSX AC4400CW is second on a southbound CPKC intermodal train in Kendleton, TX.

Not only is this train set apparently running in circles between Florida and Colorado, but the CSX power is even making the trip more than once! I caught this exact same CSX unit on the point of this same train set about two weeks earlier, on January 12th. On this partly cloudy morning, the train has clear signals to Bypass 2 in Denver.

It's been about four months now, and coal trains with CSX power are still rolling on the Moffat from time-to-time. After loading at the West Elk Mine, this loaded is headed for Denver to cut out its mid-train swings and then continue out on to the plains toward its final destination of Florida.

A single CSX ES44AC brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal train under partly cloudy skies. In the background, a tower stands on the grounds of the Ralston Development Corporation. The company is an alternative fuel research company, though I am unsure exactly what the tower is used for.

I have to admit that I very much like CSX's Dark Future scheme (seen here). Perhaps it is because that for me, like many people I suppose, blue is my favorite color. In any case, these units still have a long haul ahead of them as this coal train will make its way to Florida!
