The westbound Canyon Spirit sits in the siding at Rocky, the conductor on the ground to give a roll by to this eastbound BNSF oil train. Between the two trains, we have power from four railroads! Union Pacific, Rocky Mountaineer, CSX, and BNSF.

Like all the Class 1 Railroads (except for BNSF), CSX has several heritage units. The CSX units do not make it to Denver very often, so I was glad I had the chance to capture the P&LE (Pittsburg & Lake Erie Railroad). The P&LE was under the control of New York Central (and later Penn Central) until 1970 when Penn Central declared bankruptcy. CSX ultimately purchased the P&LE in the early 1990s, leading to the eventual creation of the 15th CSX heritage unit, painted at the Waycross shops in 2024.

CSX 1981 led an 11,500-foot westbound coal empty on Monday. Two days later, CSX 1981 is once again leading on the Moffat! This time, it and a sister CSX unit lead half of that 11,500-foot coal train east across Kipling Street in Arvada. Longs Peak, one of the 14ers (mountain peaks that exceed 14,000-feet in elevation) is clearly visible in the distance to the right.

The project to increase the height of Gross Reservoir is nearly completion, as you can see in the distance. In the foreground, we've got an extremely long westbound coal empty, led by a pair of CSX units and a newly painted UP C44ACM. CSX 1981 is one of 21 heritage units CSX has painted up, honoring the railroads that have gone in to making CSX.

This is the longest train I've ever personally seen on the Moffat. The train is effectively two coal empties stuck together into one. Behind the three lead units (including a pair of CSX ES44AHs) is 105 cars. Then, there are three mid-train DPUs (hidden behind the hill at Big Ten). Behind those three mid-train DPUs is another 104 cars. The train is 11,500 feet long. When the head end reaches East Plain, the tail end will just be passing West Eisele (Clay)! At that length, there are only two sidings between Denver and Grand Junction in which the train could fit between switches: Allen in Glenwood Canyon (at 14,250 feet), and Palisade just east of Grand Junction (at 12,200 feet).
