We are only a week away from the shortest day of the year, so the sun is setting mighty early! With roughly 30 minutes left before the sun dips behind the Rocky Mountains, a northbound special crosses the South Platte River between La Salle and Greeley. The UP train, with a CSX visitor from the east, is a special nuclear cask train.

Just south of the E-470 overpass, a sole CSX ES44AH leads a special train north on the Greeley Sub. The two curious looking cars on this train are carrying radioactive nuclear material. The casks allow the material to be safely transported by rail.

CSX 798 has slowed to a stop on Main 2 just shy of Ulster Street. Shortly, the train will continue west and then head north on the Greeley Sub, where it will stop near Sand Creek to wait for a fresh crew to continue north.

Just west of the small town of Watkins, this special westbound (with a sole CSX leader) crosses a short trestle on the trip. Once arriving Denver, the crew will be relieved and a new crew will take the train north on the Greeley Sub.

An unexpected train came west on the Limon Sub on this Sunday morning. Two nuclear casks were being moved by a single CSX ES44AH, seen here crossing Kiowa Creek near Bennett. The nuclear casks are used to transport radioactive material safely by rail.

Hiding alongside BNSF's fire fighting trainset, still cast partly in shadows, a CSX ES44AH sits with a couple of BNSF units, waiting for their next assignment.

If you were unfamiliar with the terrain here, you might think this shot was taken somewhere east of the Mississippi! After all, a CN/CSX lash up is rare enough, but it is almost unheard of in Colorado. CN 3368, an AC44C6M, and CSX 3293, an ET44AH, lead the way south on Main 1 in perfect afternoon light on Super Bowl Sunday.

Yard Shots CSX
Interesting story behind this CSX ES40DC. It, along with 301 of its CSX siblings, were actually delivered as a 4400 HP ES44DC. Around 2010, CSX actually downgraded the prime movers to 4000 HP and redesignated the units as ES40DCs. UP is currently leasing this one as it sits on the ready track at North Yard.

This southbound unit ethanol train is crossing over Hwy 105 just north of the north switch of Monument. Although it is not quite visible in the shot, this bridge is still labeled as "Rio Grande". Today, Union Pacific owns the single track mainline through Colorado Springs, but BNSF dispatches it.

At just shy of 7,200 feet above sea level, this colorful southbound unit ethanol train has reached the top of Palmer Divide. The CSX/CP mix of power rolls by several folks out fishing in Palmer Lake while enjoying the absolutely beautiful October morning.

CSX 938 leads a southbound UP unit ethanol train into "The Sag" on Main 1, just north of Palmer Lake. Prior to the creation of the joint line, Santa Fe crossed over Rio Grande here. You can still see the abutment of the old bridge in the lower right. Now, Main 1 has a definite downhill grade as it descends from the original Santa Fe grade down the original Rio Grande grade.

CSX 938, CSX 4742, CSX 313, and CP 8006 are some very colorful units leading a unit ethanol train south on the Joint Line. The train is just south of Blakeland, a few miles north of Palmer Lake and the top of Palmer Divide. There are a couple tiny ponds on the east side of Main 2, which offer up some nice scenery in the area. The ethanol train itself is on Main 1.

An ES44AC, an SD70MAC, and two AC4400CWs lead a southbound unit ethanol train on Main 1 of the Joint Line, just south of Castle Rock. CSX blue looks mighty nice on this clear day, and is a welcome change from the usual railroad colors found in Colorado.
