A grain train unloads at Windsor, CO on the Great Western Railroad. UP brought the train down on the Greeley Sub and delivered it to the Great Western, whose crews took over for the unloading. A unique visitor from the east happens to be leading the train!

UP's MGJNY includes a visitor from the east today! The third unit on the manifest is a Norfolk Southern SD70ACe, #1010. Always great to catch a foreign visitor to change up the colors a bit.

After meeting its eastbound counterpart, the Denver-Provo continues to hold the siding at Rocky to meet an eastbound hyrailer! This track maintainer observed a defect in the rail around Coal Creek Canyon that is going to require repair before the westbound can get underway. The hyrailer will meet with a crew from Leyden that will head up to Coal Creek and conduct repairs.

Near the west end of Rocky, BNSF's westbound Denver-Provo sits in the siding, waiting patiently. The train has just met an eastbound BNSF manifest, but now needs to wait for some track repairs that were found by a hyrailer up at Coal Creek Canyon. The crew has been told to get comfortable and expect to wait for at least 90 minutes, and quite probably longer.

A coal empty passes by the open hoppers that wrap around the inside curve of Big Ten. Those hoppers have been sitting there alongside the main for nearly 50 years, serving as a wind break. This morning, An SD70ACe and an NS AC4400CW lead four other UP GEs west around the curve.

UP's eastbound rail train had a Norfolk Southern SD60E in the consist! A rare visitor to Colorado, this was original a (standard cab) SD60 that Norfolk Southern rebuilt at its Altoona, PA shops. In addition to adding a wide cab, the unit received some electrical upgrades as well.

This massive Provo-Denver (with six units on the point and one DPU on the tail end) had to stop and tie down here at Rocky. At the time, BNSF had no room train in the yard. A van is coming out from Denver to pick up the crew and take them to their hotel. When the yard is ready, a Denver-based crew will come out and take the train the remaining 17 or so miles in to the yard.

You may note that the cab on this Norfolk Southern looks a little different. This unit is designated as an SD60E. Norfolk Southern has rebuilt 100 or so SD60s at their locomotive shops in Altoona, PA. Electronics were upgraded and the standard spartan cabs were replaced with Norfolk Southern's own version of a wide cab.

I caught this train above the tracks at East Cliff and then hustled down to the base of Coal Creek to get ready for a shot. Fortunately, the train was restricted to 20 MPH between Crescent and Rocky due to high winds. That gave me some extra time to climb around in the Jefferson County Open Space to try to find the best perspective possible.

An amazing consist rounds the curve at MP 23, right at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. Fortunately, mother nature cooperated and the skies are nice and sunny as the train continues east.

The first five units in this rainbow consist are units that I actually shot earlier this week on Wednesday and Thursday. Units four and five were on the Denver-Provo on Wednesday (along with another NS unit that is not on this train). Units one, two, and three led the Denver-Provo on Thursday.

A very colorful consist emerges from the east portal of Tunnel One. Only two of the six units on the head end of this eastbound are BNSF, but the train itself is indeed BNSF. The first three units were on a Denver-Provo which I shot a few days ago on Thursday.

Looking down from high above the east end of Cliff, we find a Ferromex ES44AC, a KCS SD70ACe, a pair of BNSFs and a pair of Norfolk Southern units all leading the Provo-Lincoln. The train is about to cross over South Boulder Creek and enter 29, the west end of the Tunnel District.

It is not uncommon for railfans to joke that BNSF and Norfolk Southern should merge...after all, "NS" already makes up the middle two letters of "BNSF". Then, of course, there are trains like this in which you have a nice mix of both BNSF and NS power! The Denver-Provo is pulling west through Barbara's Gulch.
