Driving on Oberon Road, you wouldn't know it was there as the fill the tracks run on blocks the view of the lake. However, from a slightly elevated vantage point, you can clearly see the lake, as can passengers aboard this evening's eastbound Zephyr. There is a break here in the Tunnel District as Tunnel 19 is just out of sight to the west and Tunnel 18 is east of Crescent, which is a 5,550 foot long siding. The next stop will be Fraser in a little over an hour. There is nothing coming east on the Moffat at the moment, so the train has a clear shot west. It was able to make up some time between Fort Morgan and Denver and is now only about an hour late as it heads west on the main at Plain. For the first time (that I can recall) since the pandemic hit, the Zephyr has eight superliners, including three coaches! It has only been running with seven for quite some time. A major storm, dumping rain and hail, moves through the southern suburbs of Denver as a single UP SD70M leads an SC-44 Charger headed for Avondale (east of Pueblo) for testing. This is a Siemens-built SC-44 "Charger", and it is being proposed as the successor to GE's (now Wabtec's) P42DC. This is already happening on some state-supported routes, such as the Amtrak Cascades route. But Amtrak has a tentative order for 75 of these for use on long distance trains. Amtrak crews are reportedly not fans of these units. They are lighter and have far less protection on the head end, should they run in to something. The unit in tow is an SC-44 "Charger", owned by the Washington Department of Transportation. That's Washington State, and this unit will be used in Amtrak Cascade service between Seattle, WA and Eugene, OR. It is currently headed to the Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo. Today's Zephyr is running five hours late, so there was no westbound resistance for the load to have to worry about coming down from the Moffat. January 2019, to be exact. Coal trains have become few and far between, on the Moffat, so it was nice to see two ES44ACs and an AC4400CW cut in to the middle of this coal train that loaded at Energy Mine on the Craig Branch. Such is the case with this train, which is now approaching a clear signal at the west switch of Leyden. Great to see a mile long train with "black diamonds" running on the Moffat again, considering how scarce these have become. Other than the orange air conditioner and antenna on the cab roof. This is one of 20 Warbonnets in the 4700-series that were delivered in Warbonnet paint with "BNSF" in 1997, after the ATSF/BN merger. Because these units were never actually ATSF units, they are sometimes referred to as "Fake-Bonnets". Still, great catching this one at Eisele (Clay) on the Provo-Denver. This is great not only because the lighting tends to be better, but a lot of the time it results in a meet with the Zephyr. However, there is one additional car catching a ride behind the Superliners. This is an Amtrak California Capitol Corridor car. It runs between San Jose and Sacramento and is head back to California after having some repairs made in Beech Grove, Indiana.
