This rather long westbound manifest on Main 2 has a single ET44AC as a mid-train swing helper as the train disappears into Hermosa Tunnel.

UP 4014 (the Big Boy) is currently stopped on Main 3 at Dale Jct. This westbound manifest beat the passenger special to Dale Jct, and the dispatcher elected to keep the manifest rolling. The train is approaching the east portal of Hermosa Tunnel on Main 2.

One of the biggest complaints about the paint scheme UP has used for the last quarter century is very clearly demonstrated in this shot. The flag that UP added to the long hood, when not properly maintained, can get pretty ragged. In the case of this SD70ACe, it has been largely burned off the long hood. That's likely one of the reasons UP has moved the flag to the sides of the nose with their latest scheme.

With the expense associated with Tier-4 diesel-electric locomotives (both initials and maintenance), the Class 1s are turning toward rebuilds rather than buying new. UP 6931 is a good example, as it has been rebuilt as a C44ACM and repainted in the newest paint scheme.

While I've shot the west portal of Hermosa before, I've never actually shot the east portal of Hermosa. At least, until this morning! An eastbound UP intermodal, with four units on the point, emerges from the tunnel on Main 1. The lead unit is a Tier-4 ET44AC.

An eastbound UP Z-Train emerges from Hermosa Tunnel on Main 1. As you can see, Hermosa Tunnel is a very high tunnel. But when the Overland was built, by far the best solution to what is effectively a deep dirt pile here was to dig to tunnels, both 1,800 feet long, through the dirt.

Even though the Overland here on the Rawlins Sub has CTC, UP generally follows left-hand running between Cheyenne and Laramie. Here, a westbound manifest is on Main 2, on the approach to the east end of the 1,800-foot long Hermosa tunnel.

A very long manifest rolls west off of Main 3 at Dale Jct with three units on the head end. You can see a pair of mid-train DPUs in the distance on the S-Curve on Main 3. For those unfamiliar, Union Pacific has two different grades between Cheyenne and Dale Jct (near Hermosa Tunnel). Mains 1 and 2 (more or less) follow I-80, while Main 3 runs much further south.

An eastbound UP manifest is on Main 1 at Tie Siding. A single SD70ACe leads the train, which is just a few thousand feet away from Hermosa Tunnel. As you can see, quite a few people are starting to gather to witness the westbound run of UP 4014 (the Big Boy) as part of UP's celebration of the United States Semiquincentennial.

A C44ACM, sporting some fresh paint in UP's latest scheme, and a Tier-4 SD70ACe-T4, bring up the tail end of an eastbound coal train. The train is running 2x3x2. Traditionally, coal load have run 2x3x1, so there is one extra unit on the tail end. Not sure if one will be removed in Denver along with the mid-train swing helpers. The two DPUs here are passing by Oberon Lake Number 1 in the midst of the suburb of Arvada.

Three GEs are serving as the mid-train swing helpers on this eastbound coal load. Coal trains have increased slightly on the Moffat in the past few months. It seems that UP has picked up a few new contracts for West Elk coal from the North Fork branch.

CSX 1981 and CSX 5477 are a pretty unusual site here in Colorado! CSX 1981 is the Pan Am Railways heritage unit. Pan Am Railways was a New England railroad purchased by CSX in 2022. After arriving in Denver, the mid-train swing helpers will be cut out, and the train will continue east on the Limon Sub.

CSX 1981 led an 11,500-foot westbound coal empty on Monday. Two days later, CSX 1981 is once again leading on the Moffat! This time, it and a sister CSX unit lead half of that 11,500-foot coal train east across Kipling Street in Arvada. Longs Peak, one of the 14ers (mountain peaks that exceed 14,000-feet in elevation) is clearly visible in the distance to the right.

Three units, a pair of SD70ACes with an ES44AC splice in between, are all elephant style on the MGJNY as it rolls east out the east end of Leyden and across the 80th Avenue grade crossing.
