Unfortunately, Amtrak was unable to get the F40PH "cab" unit that they had last year, meaning the power here will have to run around the train at Fraser each day before returning back east. Downtown Denver is already bathed in morning sunlight. The tracks at Leyden still hide in the shadows of the hill to the east. The train is a good length and, as is generally the case with BNSF trains on the Moffat, it is primarily composed of tank cars. An eastbound Provo-Lincoln manifest slowly rolls along in the siding at Leyden. The Grand Junction based crew does not have enough time remaining to make it in to Denver, so a relief crew will greet the train at the east end of Leyden. Not bad, considering winter is typically the slow season for Amtrak. It's not uncommon for the Zephyr to only have 6 or 7 Superliners this time of year. This particular Zephyr departed Chicago about an hour late as it had to pick up Superliners for the Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train). It also ended up having an SD70MAC added in the midwest. With a top speed of 70 MPH, that also slowed the train down a bit. Then, the SD70MAC was removed in Denver, along with the Superliners. The east portal of Tunnel One is just ahead of the lead P42DC. From looking in the windows of the Lounge car as the Zephyr rolled by, it looked like there was a pretty good crowd aboard for this New Year's Day adventure.
