It has been quite some time since I've seen one of these! A patched Chicago Northwestern AC4400CW actually has some of its patchwork wearing off. You can pretty clearly see that this was once CNW 8819. This is one of 35 such units that Chicago Northwestern got right before becoming a part of Union Pacific.

For the second time in a week, I caught a Canadian National unit spending some time on BNSF. With the recent need for power, Class 1 railroads seem to be sharing more power among themselves. This SD75I is one of 172 such units on Canadian National's roster.

This southbound train with very unique power is tied down in the siding at North Yard in Fort Collins (right at milepost 76)! A Great Western crew brought the train to this point (it was interchanged from the Great Western). A BNSF crews has been called out of Cheyenne and was enroute at the time of this picture. Upon arrival, the crew would untie the train and take it to Denver.

Canadian National has a fair number of "cowl" units, meaning the walkways along the sides of the unit are inside the car body rather than outside. Internally this unit is simply a GE C40-8. Since it has the cowl body, it is designated as a C40-8M.

Two of the mid-train swing helpers on this eastbound coal load happened to be former (patched) CNW AC4400CWs. These units are really starting to look beat up as their paint schemes are getting close to being 20 years old.

Orin (BNSF) Chicago North Western, Union Pacific
Burlington Northern built the south end of the Orin Sub in the late 1970's, completing the connection with the north end in 1979. Chicago North Western was interested in helping finance the operation, but didn't have the money (Union Pacific would end up helping instead). Interesting now to see a (patched) CNW AC4400CW leading a westbound (geographic northbound) coal empty on Main 3 some 32 years later.

This Canadian National SD75I was something of a treat here in Colorado! The unit the second of two on BNSF's daily Kansas City to Denver priority manifests.

I always think it is worthwhile posting pictures of patched units. This AC4400CW was CNW 8829 up until June 2004 when it received its patch. Considering it has been 14 years since the UP/CNW merger, I'd say this unit is looking pretty darn good!

BNSF's HDENLAU had a rare treat on this particular morning. A Zebra-striped full body Canadian National SD60F was included in the consist. Canadian national is the only railroad that ordered several full body units from EMD and GE after 1970.

While Union Pacific purchased over 1,000 SD70Ms, Canadian National ordered the unit with a minor variation. This is an SD70I, which is like the SD70M, but with an EMD WhisperCab. Only 26 units were produced and all went to Canadian National. Not a bad catch for the middle of Colorado!

UP's passenger special - moving their business cars from Oakland, CA back to Council Bluffs, IA - heads east through the S-Curves on Main Two at Archer. UP 1995 was just an added bonus on this great looking train.

Each Winter, UP stores is passenger cars in Oakland, CA. Each Spring, the cars are moved to their summer base in Council Bluffs, IA. This year, the 20 car train had the CNW Heritage Unit (UP 1995) on the point as it made its journey. Here, the train is just outside Cheyenne where it will receive a crew change.

After stopping at the north end of Broomfield, the conductor from the DENLAU has thrown the switch from the main to the siding. The train has a track warrant all the way to North Yard (in Fort Collins) and it is getting ready to roll in that direction!

A rare treat on this Denver to Laurel, MT freight as a Canadian National cowl SD60F joins the lead power. Internally, the unit is just an EMD SD60. However, there are no external walkways. You can walk alongside the prime mover inside the shell of the unit to get to the next unit. Canadian National has 86 such units on their roster.
