Coming around Big Ten Curve, the eastbound Zephyr is descending the nearly 2% grade toward Rocky. Note the tail end of the open hoppers that serve as a wind break to the right of the frame. You can see the Denver skyline off in the distance, where the Zephyr itself will be in about 45 minutes.

The lounge car, along with the rest of the westbound Zephyr, is about to pass underneath the Continental Divide. What you may not know, is that the actually bore in the mountain is still above 500 feet ahead of the lounge car in this shot. There is a significant structure that houses the equipment for ventilating the tunnel.

The trailheads at East Portal are a very popular destination for hikers, particularly on the weekend. You can see dozens of cars parked in the lots and long the road. Some of these hikers no doubt take notice of the westbound Zephyr as it approaches the Moffat Tunnel.

Running about 45 minutes late, the westbound Zephyr is approaching the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Here, at East Portal, the tracks run parallel to South Boulder Creek. The water for which is primarily sourced from the west slope after coming through the Moffat Water Tunnel. We are right around 9,200 feet above sea level, the highest point on Amtrak's system, and the highest active point on Class 1 railroads.

AMTK 76 knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden on its morning journey west. The east end Leyden is designated as CP DS012 by Union Pacific (as you can see on the signs by the signals). The "DS" represents "Denver & Salt Lake", David Moffat's railroad that predated Rio Grande. The "12", of course, indicates we are 12 miles west of Denver Union Station.

After running several hours late the previous two days (due to extreme mid-west weather), this morning's Zephyr is running right on time as it heads west from Denver, through Arvada. Major forest fires in the Pacific Northwest are creating smoke that is resulting in the Denver-Metro area being very hazy. You can barely see the Denver skyline in the distance as the Zephyr approaches Leyden.

The shutter fired just a moment too late, almost cutting off part of the nose on AMTK 157 and the westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1. The train experiences over three hours of delays in the mid-west due to extreme weather and downed trees.

A scene from above Eisele (Clay) finds the westbound Zephyr running just about 3 1/2 hours late. The train is on the main and should have no need to stop again before its scheduled station stop in Fraser. Note the tracks to the left, just west of Rocky, leading up to Big Ten Curve.

The head end of the Zephyr is approach a clear (green) signal at east Eisele (Clay).
