At the north siding switch of Broomfield, the southbound Laurel, MT to Denver, CO manifest takes a "sharp left" and heads in to the siding. The "sharp left" is in railroad terms, of course. The siding and the main at Broomfield are, for the most part, on separate grades and there is quite a bit of distance between them in places. The first of two northbounds the HLAUDEN will meet is sitting on the main, waiting for the train to get in the clear and then to get a track warrant to proceed north.

Here is an obligatory roster shot of Norfolk Southern's "Southern" Heritage Unit. I think this is one of the sharper looking heritage units that Norfolk Southern has. Note the "K" on the cab behind "8099". This is part of a number check system that Southern used.
To find the letter, do the following:
1st digit + (2nd digit times 2) + 3rd digit + (4th digit times 2).
If doubling a digit results in a two digit number (9 x 2 = 18), then add the two digits together to get a single digit. So 9 x 2 = 18, 1 + 8 = 9.
So, using this formula, (8 + 0 + 9 + ((9x2=18), (1+8=9), so 9)) = 26.
Subtract that number from the next even multiple of 10. So 30 - 26 = 4.
Then, find the letter that corresponds to the calculated number:
0 = A,
1 = F,
2 = H,
2 = J,
4 = K,
5 = L,
6 = R,
7 = T,
8 = W,
9 = X
From the calculation above, the single digit number we calculated was "4", and "4" matches "K", which is exactly the letter that is on the cab!

BNSF has a problem. I suppose it is a good problem when compared to the types of problems the Rock Island or the Pennsy once had. BNSF is under powered, under manned, and over capacity. This McCook-bound manifest was supposed to pass this spot close to 36 hours earlier. But it got tied down in western Colorado due to a shortage of available crews. Then, when it finally reached Denver, it was again supposed to depart around 0900. A crew wasn't called for it until 1230 and then it had several problems getting going. It is nearly 1700 in this shot as the train holds at the east end of yard for westbound traffic. It would remain here until after 1830. That means that in the six hours the crew was on duty (half their time), the train moved just a hair over three miles!

As close to a roster shot as I could get of NS 8101, the Central of Georgia Heritage unit. This is the 2nd of Norfolk Southern's 20 heritage units that I have been lucky enough to shoot in Denver. Central of Georgia started WAY back in 1833 (as the Central Rail Road and Canal Company). It acquired a lot of railroads in the 19th century and, in 1956, operated 2,646 miles of track. On June 17, 1963, the railroad became a subsidiary of Southern Railway which, of course, was one of the founding railroads of today's Norfolk Southern.

For the second time in three months, I was lucky enough to witness one of Norfolk Southern's heritage units passing through (leased by BNSF) in Colorado. NS 8101 wears the paint scheme for the railroad "Central of Georgia". It is paired up with a CSX AC4400CW on a train that originated in Provo and is headed for McCook, NE.
