The eastbound Zephyr on Track 4, led by AMTK 170, makes final preparations to depart east. The Zephyr just dropped off the Winter Park Express trainset, led by AMTK 142, sitting on Track 5. Once the Zephyr gets its mechanical release, it will pull away from the station, leaving the Winter Park Express equipment behind for the upcoming ski season. The temperature outside is a chilly 15°F (-10°C).

The eastbound Zephyr arrived in Denver 3 1/2 hours late this evening, but it had two extra P42DCs and five Superliners in tow. That trainset is actually the Winter Park Express! The Zephyr set out the WPE on Trak 5 at Union Station. The Zephyr then put its power back on the train on Track 4. AMTK 142 and AMTK 192 will be the power for the Winter Park Express, at least at the start of the season. It is a rather cold 15°F (-10°C) on the platform at Union Station this evening.

The westbound Zephyr climbs the roughly 2% grade in a powdery, snow-covered scene the morning of January 8, 2024. The train has just snaked its way through the curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon and is about to disappear in to Tunnel 1. The first of 28 tunnels the train will pass through before reaching the Moffat Tunnel.

Overnight in the Denver-Metro, an average of around 4" of snow fell. The Zephyr is running about two hours late this morning, and a few westbound freight trains have already come through, cleaning the snow off the rails.

The overcast skies provide a nice opportunity to get a shot of the Zephyr wrapping through the curves at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. In the distance, you can see the steal tower that lies right along the rails between Leyden and Rocky.

The westbound Zephyr diverges through the switch at East Plain and in to the siding, meeting an eastbound UP coal train that is holding the main. The conductor for that coal load is on the ground, ready to give a "roll by" to the Zephyr.

The westbound Zephyr appears to be headed directly toward an eastbound UP coal load. However, the Zephyr is actually lined in to the siding here for the meet. If you look closely at the signal, you can see it shows a Diverging Approach (red over yellow).

The westbound Zephyr has just emerged from Tunnel 1. The train had an Advanced Approach (yellow over yellow) at the previous intermediate. It will be taking the siding at Plain to meet an eastbound coal load that is already there waiting on it.
