After leaving the urban Denver-metropolitan area behind, this eastbound coal train has entered into the rural plains of eastern Colorado on its way toward Kansas and points further east.

About a week ago, I got some shots of an eastbound coal train that was led by CSX units. Today, I was able to catch another eastbound coal load, but this one was led by a Norfolk Southern "catfish". A name given to wide cab Norfolk Southern units because the white stripes on the nose look a bit like whiskers.

In eastern Aurora, I-70 runs northwest-to-southeast and crosses over UP's Limon Sub right at Mesa. With I-70 visible in the background, the NS-led eastbound is about to pass underneath I-70.

Typically when I nab a picture that includes the Denver skyline, I'm on the west side of town. On this particular day, however, I'm on the east side of town! A Norfolk Southern unit leads the eastbound coal load on the main at Mesa. Much of the Limon Sub in Aurora parallels Smith Road.

At Mesa, an eastbound coal load is on the move on the main track. A bit of an unusual visitor, a Norfolk Southern ES44AC leads the train on its journey toward the Colorado plains.

A trio of EMDs, setup elephant-style, lead up a westbound manifest. The two SD70Ms are the two online. The GP40-2 is returning to Denver after a 90-day inspection in North Little Rock, AR. The GP40-2 is actually of DRGW heritage. Specifically, DRGW 3111.

A westbound UP manifest slows to a stop on the main at Mesa. As this point on this cold afternoon, the yard does not have a spot open for the train just yet. So, the train shall follow the old adage "hurry up and wait".

UP's Salina, KS to Denver, CO manifest crosses Picadilly Road on the far east side of Aurora. The train is coming up to an approach signal at the east end of Mesa. The train will hold the main at Mesa until the 36th Street yard opens a spot for the train.

A westbound manifest kicks up some snow on the main along the siding of Old Mesa just east of Mesa. The temperature outside is a mere 5°F.

There is a bridge on a curve just west of Watkins that works quite well for both eastbounds and westbounds. Here, a westbound UP manifest has an all-EMD consist on the point. The first unit is my personal favorite unit of the last 20 years or so. An SD70M with flared radiators.

UP runs a manifest on the Limon Sub between Denver, CO and Salina, KS several times a week. It seems to be a bit elusive at times, but I happened to come across it just west of Watkins on a frigid January morning.

An eastbound coal train descends the descent (for the plains) grade located at Cedar Point, about 10 miles west of Limon. This former siding has now been downgraded to a very long stub track! If you look closely, you may notice that there is no switch with the main track in the distance. The track just comes to an end. UP removed the switch a few years ago. On this beautiful afternoon, a single SD70ACe brings up the tail end of the train.

One location on the Limon Sub that offers up some good shots throughout most of the day is Cedar Point. This siding is about 10 miles west of Limon, CO. And, in fact, it really is not even a siding anymore. It is a 4,800-foot-long stub track! UP actually removed the east switch of the siding, and it can only be accessed from the west end now. Here, a coal train descends downgrade as it crosses over said west switch.

The Limon Sub is something of an interesting operation for UP. Years ago, UP chose a handful of sidings (7, to be exact) to upgrade between Denver, CO and Sharon Springs, KS. These sidings were, in some cases, lengthed. All had signals added to each end that were dispatcher controlled. The other sidings that are along the line (7 as well, to be exact) UP all but abandoned. One such example of the essentially-abandoned sidings is here in Agate. As you can see, the track condition is not in great shape. The siding is only 4,837 feet long, too.

Fall colors are in full swing out on the Colorado plains as an eastbound coal train charges through downtown Agate, CO. In addition to the great color of the tree, rusty farm equipment adds to the character of the image.
