This (along with DRGW 3003) was the longest-lasting GP30 on the roster, remaining on UP's active roster until retirement on July 30, 1999. DRGW 3002 was also one of only four Rio Grande GP30's to receive the large letter paint scheme (along with 3001, 3014, and 3027). Over this summer, they borrowed the Rio Grande GP60's (even though 3156 had been repainted to UP 5702 less than a month ago).
