A quartet of elephant-style units, two EMD and two GE, lead the MNYGR across a relatively full South Platte River on the Belt Industrial Lead. This is a single track, CTC line that connects North Yard (and the Moffat) with 36th Street (and the Greeley Sub).

An SD70ACe leads UP's MNYGR (Manifest from North Yard, CO to Green River, WY). The length of train varies from day-to-day. This Sunday morning, the train is an impressive 142 cars long. Over 8,000 feet in length, including the power. Here, the train is making its way across the Belt Industrial Lead, passing by the Stock Yards and about to cross over York Street.

After a layover in Denver on Bypass 1 at North Yard, UP 1943 and its empty westbound oil train is departing on Main 1 at C&S Junction. The four tracks east of C&S Junction, from left to right, are Bypass 1, Bypass 2, Main 3, and the North Yard Siding. At C&S Junction, when heading west, these filter down to just two tracks. From left to right, we have Main 1 and Main 2.

UP 1943, UP's unit painted in tribute to the US military, was taken off its train by the inbound crew. The outbound crew, which went on duty at 9:45am, brought the power back out to the train. The hand brakes are being knocked off, and it will be ready to depart westbound shortly.

While searching for UP 1943, which is supposed to be leading a westbound oil train out of Denver later in the day, I came across this old UP SD60M! It was originally delivered as UP 6337 in September 1992. What is the fate of the unit? My guess would be that it is on its way to storage, but I do not know.

There are only five AC4400CWs still on UP's roster that have not received a full UP repaint. UP 6236 is one such example, still in its original scarlet and gray, with yellow UP patches applied. Here, it sits in North Yard awaiting assignment after arriving on the MGJNY. The unit actually served on the Minturn Local (which hasn't gone as far as Minturn in decades) just a few days ago in the Colorado high country. This was originally SP 257.

I'm speculating that UP 4039 has spent some time either in either Southern California or maybe the Houston area in Texas. Those locations tend to attract a lot "taggers"; people that apply graffiti to things.

UP 1357 and UPY 625 sit idle in North Yard, not far from the yard tower. When needed, they will be used to switch cars in the yard. UP 1357 started life as DRGW 3102. Amazingly, the GP40-2 that spent so many years on the former Grande, can still be regularly found in and around Denver.

UP 1905 is an SD40N. It has been rebuilt by UP from an SD40-2, along with dozens (even hundreds) of others. The unit was originally UP 3205, delivered in May 1973.

A single AC4400CW sits near the ready tracks in North Yard. I shot this same unit the day before. It was the lead unit on a westbound oil train. It stopped in the siding at Leyden because this unit was leaking air to the extent the train went in to emergency and could not be recovered. You can see a bypass hose lining the right side of the unit. It's possible the unit is waiting to be taken to North Platte, NE for repairs.

UP's manifest from North Yard to Green River, WY sits at the north end of Track 8 in North Yard. After the westbound Zephyr passes by, the train will head for the Belt Industrial Lead, and on to the Greeley Sub. The train will have to "double over", meaning it will pick up the second half of its train from a different track. The train will be 8,100 feet long when it finally departs. To the left, we see a long line of trailers waiting to either be loaded on to trains, or picked up by trucks, at BNSF's Rennicks intermodal facility.

A pair of UP AC4400CWs are the bookends to a BNSF C44-9W. The Dash-9 is sporting the Heritage paint scheme. The units are on the UP's MNYGR (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Green River, WY). Some crew members talk on the ground. the train is waiting for the westbound Zephyr to pass by before heading for the Belt Line. The lead unit, UP 6189, was originally SP 146!
