This spot at the east end of Plain is one of my favorite places to shoot a morning westbound. Sadly, it will only be usable for another few years (at most) as a handful of pine trees are slowly growing up toward obstruction of the scene. For the time being, however, the westbound Winter Park Express (on its second run) heads down the main at Plain.

The westbound Winter Park Express knocks down the signal at the east end of Plain. High morning winds are causing a lot of snow to get whipped up and blown around.

The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the east end of Plain on its trip west. While getting this shot on this morning, it occurred to me that, within a few more years, this shot will no longer be possible as the trees in the foreground will no doubt grow and obscure the view.

After arriving on the MRONY the day before, UP 1996 is headed back west as the sole DPU on the tail end of the MNYRO. The train got stuck in the siding at Plain for awhile. An eastbound BNSF manifest came by on the main and met Amtrak at Eisele (formerly Clay). DS-82 held the MNYRO in the siding at Plain to allow the Zephyr to pass by on the main. That is exactly what is happening here as the Zephyr heads west.

It may not be Rio Grande, but eight units (with more than 50% EMD) all wearing (close to) the same paint scheme look mighty fine. A few wild sunflowers greet the manifest as it heads west on a clear signal at Plain.

Now this is what I'm talking about! Five EMDs (3 SD70Ms, an SD60M, and an SD40-2) power this westbound MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard to Roper, UT) on the main at Plain. The three (significantly dirtier) GEs behind the EMDs are DIC (Dead in Consist) and are just catching a ride to Glenwood Springs so they can be setout and used as midtrain swing helpers on an eastbound coal load.

For reason I was unable to determine, the Zephyr lost over four hours between McCook, NE and Fort Morgan, CO. Alas, the results being a high sun with a lot of back lighting for this shot at Plain.

"Hey buddy, can you lend a hand?" UP's MNYRO is stopped on the main at Plain because they are having issues getting anywhere close to track speed. DS-82 aligned BNSF's QDVPVJ into the siding alongside the MNYRO. The train stopped and the engineer hopped in to the end DPU to ensure that it was configured and working properly. Turns out it was and the train, with only three units, was likely under-powered.

At the east switch of Plain, the westbound MNYGJ heads down the main. While the MNYRO usually carries some cars to be setout in Grand Junction, there are days when the MNYRO doesn't run. Combine that with a high number of cars headed for Grand Junction and the MNYGJ is often needed. It runs every Sunday to be sure in place of the MNYRO.

A westbound coal empty takes the siding at Plainview. The dispatcher instructed the train to stop short of the grade crossing so as not to block cars. Unfortunately, this shot shows where the train actually stopped, which is much further east that normal.
