Two of its sister units, 402 and 403, were sold to the Royal Gorge Route Railroad in Canon City, CO. 401 was not lucky enough to be included in that deal, and so here it rolls east on the Sidney Sub. A patched Chicago Northwestern AC4400CW actually has some of its patchwork wearing off. You can pretty clearly see that this was once CNW 8819. Chicago North Western was interested in helping finance the operation, but didn't have the money (Union Pacific would end up helping instead). Interesting now to see a (patched) CNW AC4400CW leading a westbound (geographic northbound) coal empty on Main 3 some 32 years later. This AC4400CW was CNW 8829 up until June 2004 when it received its patch. Considering it has been 14 years since the UP/CNW merger, I'd say this unit is looking pretty darn good! Each Spring, the cars are moved to their summer base in Council Bluffs, IA. This year, the 20 car train had the CNW Heritage Unit (UP 1995) on the point as it made its journey. Rumor has it that one of UP's Board Members was a fan (or perhaps even worked for) the CNW, which is likely why this is the second heritage unit chosen for the trip.
