The lighting wasn't fantastic as the train was pointed directly into the sun, but you cannot pass up the chance for a quick roster shot of a Kansas City Southern Belle. Especially considering this paint scheme will be disappearing in the coming years with Kansas City Southern and Canadian Pacific merging to form CPKC.

Between late 2018 and early 2019, Kansas City Southern decided to dip a toe into the Tier-4 locomotive lineup, purchasing 25 GE ET44ACs. One example, KCS 5010, just happened to be the second unit on an eastbound BNSF oil train here at Eisele.

KCS 4803 is the second of three units on a northbound BNSF manifest that is coming to Denver from Dodge City, KS. Good to get as many shots of KCS Retro Belles while they are still on the rails, before they are all repainted.

A southbound BNSF manifest (Denver, CO to Amarillo, TX) has some unique power with a KCS Belle and NS "Catfish" elephant style on the head end. The train is currently waiting on Main 1 to Walnut for a green signal to continue south.

An eastbound BNSF (loaded) oil train snakes away from the camera, under the Colorado Highway 93 overpass, into and through Barbara's Gulch. A KCS Retro Belle makes for a nice view of the rear DPU.

An SD70ACe and a KCS AC4400CW bring up the tail end of a loaded BNSF oil train. I love catching as many Retro Belles as possible now that the merger between Kansas City Southern and Canadian Pacific is complete. It is only a matter of time before this KCS paint scheme fades in to history.

This eastbound BNSF oil train had a nice surprise as a Kansas City Southern AC4400CW is the trailing DPU on the main at Plain.

This is a paint scheme that I am definitely going to miss! Granted, Kansas City Southern units don't make it to Colorado particularly often, but when they do, they are great to see. With the merger of CP and KCS, creating CPKC, both the Canadian Pacific and KCS paint schemes will be replaced by a new scheme.

A pair of CPKC units (one CP, one KCS) are quite a ways from home as they lead a coal empty north on the Greeley Sub. The train is slowing for the grade crossing at MP 29.99 (County Road 22). A previous train reported that the main lights and gates were working, but the lights on one of the gates were broken off and hanging down. Consequently, an "XH" order was placed on the crossing. This requires all trains to slow to ensure no cars are going through the crossing when they shouldn't.

This coal empty was holding south of the siding of Brighton so as not to block grade crossing through town. When the southbound it was meeting showed up, the train pulled in to the siding. However, nobody informed the crew that the southbound is a local that is blocking the north end of the siding, preventing the coal empty from leaving! So the crossing in Brighton wound up blocked for over 30 minutes anyway.

Two days earlier, I saw these exactly same units as DPUs on the Denver-Provo. I shot them at Glenwood and then again at Grand Valley in Parachute. The got to Provo overnight and then departed back east on the Provo-Denver a little later in the day.

Before starting the 200 mile journey back home, I stuck around at Grand Valley for one last look as KCS 4742 and BNSF 8597 as they bring up the rear of the Denver-Provo. Within 90 minutes or so, the train will reach Grand Junction for a crew change and some switching of cars before continuing on toward Provo.

Today's Denver-Provo has a bit of a surprise visitor as the first of two DPUs. A Kansas City Southern ES44AC is currently being power shared with BNSF, joined with a BNSF SD70ACe.
