The scene around the Blue Mountain Road Crossing is summarized in a single word: GREEN! The Rocky Mountaineer is passing through the beautiful, lush scene, brought on thanks to huge levels of rainfall this May. As of this picture, this May has seen nearly 6 inches of rain the Denver area...the fourth wettest May on record.

Afternoon thunderstorms have given rise to dramatic clouds this evening as the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer crosses Blue Mountain Road Crossing. The train has roughly 25 miles remaining in its trip in to the yard.

RMRX 8021, a rebuilt GP40-3, leads the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer "Rockies to the Red Rocks" train out of the east portal of Tunnel 1. Passengers started their trip the previous day, departing Moab, UT in the mid-afternoon. They spent the night in Glenwood Springs last night and are now completing their trip to Denver.

As somebody that grew up on (EMD-only) Rio Grande, it is great listening to the classic two-stroke prime movers in RMRX 8020 and RMRX 8021 as they pull the Rocky Mountaineer west up the grade.

I should probably clarify my statement of Rio Grande being "EMD-only". While it is true that, over the years, Rio Grande did own some GE and ALCO units, by the time I was old enough to go train chasing with my dad, Rio Grande was an EMD-only railroad.

GP40-3s RMRX 8020 and RMRX 8021 kick out a bit of exhaust as the train throttles up approaching the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. In the next three days, the train will run out to Moab, UT and then return back to Denver, CO.

The clouds have descended in the area, creating a layer of fog. Headlights from the westbound Rocky Mountaineer cut through the fog as the train approaches the Blue Mountain grade crossing.

Despite the explosive growth of the Denver suburb of Arvada, there are still a few places where, with the correct perspective, you can get a rural feel! This shot, just west of Leyden, is one such spot. In reality, there are relatively new neighborhoods both to the right of the frame and to the left of the frame.

It is an unusually overcast morning in the Denver area, with temperatures barely reaching 50°F. No view of the Denver skyline on this morning! The westbound Rocky Mountaineer passes by a horse pasture which currently has quite a few containers of chemicals, perhaps containing fertilizer?

Just west of Leyden, two of Rocky Moutaineer's GP40-3s lead the westbound train. The Rocky Mountaineer is always a welcome sight as it breaks up a lot of the monotony that is typically seen on the Moffat. The train will spend the night in Glenwood Springs tonight before continuing on to Moab tomorrow.

The 10-car westbound Rocky Mountaineer crosses CO-72 on the main at Cliff, meeting an eastbound BNSF manifest. The BNSF manifest had asked the dispatcher if it would be possible to meet the Mountaineer further east. However, the dispatcher informed the crew the siding at Crescent is out of service (for reasons not given) and that Plain was "loaded up with maintenance of way equipment". The Mountaineer was at Leyden when the request was made. There was not enough time to make it to Eisele (Clay), so the manifest was stuck here at Cliff for a little over an hour.

One of the perks that the Rocky Mountaineer features are the oversized windows and partial windowing on the roof on its cars. These windows offer the same types of views you'd find on Amtrak's sightseer lounge cars. Just one of the many items of added luxury you find on the Mountaineer.

Just west of Tunnel 29, the Rocky Mountaineer crosses the well-known bridge (amongst railfans of the Moffat, anyway) that crosses South Boulder Creek. The train is headed for a clear (green) signal around the bend at the east switch of Cliff.

The westbound Rocky Mountaineer: Rockies to the Red Rocks emerges from the shortest tunnel in the Tunnel District, Tunnel 29. The tunnel is only 78 feet long! The trains has been following South Boulder Creek for several miles, and only now is the elevation of the creek getting close to that of the tracks. This is the first revenue run of the Rocky Mountaineer for the 2023 season.

Two of the Rocky Mountaineer's GP40-3s lead the first revenue run of the 2023 season up to the east portal of Tunnel 1. If you'd like to take a trip on the train, one way tickets from Denver to Moab start at $1,976/person. This includes meals and an overnight stay at a hotel in Glenwood Springs.
