Looking north from 120th Avenue, the Zephyr is running on clear signals as it charges north at track speed on UP's Greeley Subdivision. The overpass in the distance is that of E-470, Denver's toll road that loops around (most) of the city.

Fall colors are starting to set in around the Denver area! The westbound Zephyr is on the roll at track speed along Havana Street in Henderson on UP's Greeley Sub. The train is detouring through Wyoming on its journey west because the Moffat is closed for maintenance.

With the Denver skyline visible in the distance, the westbound California Zephyr charges north through Henderson. The train is passing the north switch of Hazeltine (note the auto racks in the siding). With the Moffat closed, the train will detour through Wyoming on UP's Overland Route.

This is rather rare mileage for the California Zephyr. The train is on the four mile long Belt Industrial Lead that connects North Yard and the Moffat to the Greeley Sub. The Zephyr crosses over York Street on a bridge with "Rio Grande" fly letters still visible on it!

The California Zephyr is passing by Xcel Energy's Cherokee Power Plant in northeast Denver. For decades, this power plant has been powered by coal. However, Xcel is nearly done converting it to run on natural gas. The two white stacks to the left are new, and part of the gas-burning portion of the plant. The stack to the right are older and part of the coal-burning portion of the plant. The Zephyr, incidentally, is here because it is detouring through Wyoming.

The westbound Zephyr is currently headed east on the Belt Industrial Lead. With the Moffat closed, the Zephyr is detouring through Wyoming, and the Belt Line is the connection from the Moffat (at North Yard) to the UP Greeley Sub.

The westbound Zephyr is leaving the siding at Plain and is about to head into the east portal of Tunnel 2. The train is running close to ontime, considering its delayed departure from Denver of 12:35pm this week.

The westbound Zephyr is on the siding at Plain meeting an eastbound coal load. It is also passing some maintenance equipment tied down on the house track. An old switch frog sits alongside the house track.

The westbound Zephyr, with a standard "fall" consist (mainly meaning eight Superliners) heads west on tracks that have fresh ties and fresh ballast. There is definitely something yellow hitching a ride on the end of the train!

The westbound Zephyr is slowly heading west just east of Barbara's Gulch. There is a 25 MPH speed restriction between East Leyden and East Rocky. There's almost sun in this shot, too! The Denver area has been overcast for nearly a week.

I actually took this specific photo as a public service. Some people in the neighborhood in which I live were wondering what to do in the event that crossing gates are ever stuck down. So, I figured I'd get a shot of the signal control box with the Railroad/DOT sign for reference.

The westbound Zephyr is running about 45 minutes late as it approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. Normally, the train would be over five hours late if it were getting to Blue Mountain at this time. However, the Zephyr is currently scheduled to depart Denver at 12:35pm to allow UP to perform maintenance in the morning and (further west) early afternoon.
