On a beautiful September morning, the westbound Zephyr, with two private cars in tow, head toward the east portal of Tunnel 17. Tunnel 17 is the longest tunnel between Denver west to (but not including, of course) the Moffat Tunnel. Note the two private cars (Patrick Henry cars) on the end of the Zephyr.

The morning Zephyr is headed west between Tunnel 16 and Tunnel 17. This is one of the longest stretches between tunnels anywhere throughout the Tunnel District.

The Zephyr has reduced its length from nine Superliners to seven Superliners, cutting one sleeper and one coach. This is pretty common at the end of the summer, when demand for Amtrak rail travel decreases a bit.

Two Patrick Henry cars are catching a ride on the back of the westbound California Zephyr. The Zephyr is taking the siding at Rocky to meet an eastbound BNSF manifest, which you can see holding the main in the distance.

AMTK 169 leads the westbound Zephyr this morning, the train coming around the curve at the narrow, west end of Barbara's Gulch. The train is passing underneath CO-93, on the approach to the east end of Rocky.

The westbound Zephyr is making track speed here in Barbara's Gulch as it hustles west, right on time this morning. The dust you see is actually from a lot of fresh ballast that was recently laid along the mainline here. Wind from the fast-moving Zephyr is blowing the dust up around the train.

Throughout the summer, the Zephyr has been running with nine Superliners: a transition sleeper, three standard sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and three coaches. However, there are only seven Superliners this morning. A sleeper and a coach have been dropped from the consist. This may signal that the summer rush is over and bookings are down. Here, the Zephyr is headed west on the main at Eisele, running right on time.

The Zephyr just knocked down a green signal at the east switch of Eisele. I've mentioned it before in other captions, but I actually do like the Phase 7 paint scheme. While the Phase 5 scheme certainly grew on me over the course of roughly 20 years, the Phase 7 scheme really pops.

AMTK 204 is the first P42DC in the 200s (as far as I know) to sport the new Phase 7 paint scheme. Slowly, Amtrak is going through the process of repainting the entire P42DC fleet in Phase 7 colors. Here, the morning Zephyr is climbing the north edge of Big Ten curve.

AMTK 207 leads an on-time westbound Zephyr across South Boulder Creek, just east of Tolland. The train will be taking the siding at Tolland to meet an eastbound BNSF oil train, which is already waiting on the main. The Zephyr will be taking the siding as DS-378 is trying to keep the oil train moving as it's crew is short on time.

I found this perspective about a week earlier, and wanted to give it another try with the Zephyr. The train is right on time as it passes west on the main at Rollins. With a keen eye, you might note that there is a private car on the end of the train this morning.

This is the way to tour the country! The Northern Sky belongs to Northern Sky Charters, and as the name implies, you too can charter this car. Not sure what the cost is, but it is looking pretty good on the tail end of the Zephyr this morning, just west of Eisele (Clay).
