The trains are running between Wash, UT (where they are loaded) and Midwest City, OK (where they are unloaded). With the recent boom in oil in the US, more such trains may be coming to the Moffat. Considering it has been 18 years since the UP/SP merger, I suppose that even 11 out of the 279 units originally delivered in 1995 isn't bad! Then again, considering it has been over 17 years since the UP/SP merger, it is pretty amazing that there are any left. Whenever I am lucky enough to see one, I always wonder if it will be the last one I will ever see. Fortunately, since they are used heavily in coal train service, there is a chance I will get to add another shot to my site in the future. The paint is definitely looking a little shoddy, but I felt pretty lucky to come across one of the only "unassimilated" units left on UP's roster! Unfortunately, the unit was pretty well tucked back in North Yard, so I had to settle for this "over the fence", "from a distance shot" from 48th Avenue. For a ten mile stretch, freights can run up to 60 MPH! The westbound MNYRO is doing its best to reach that goal here in the town of Parshall, CO about a mile east of Flat. The winter ski season is getting close to an end as this westbound MNYRO pops out of the west portal of the Moffat Tunnel and passes by a still-busy Winter Park ski resort.
