A term sometimes used to describe when a hole opens up in the clouds to provide some direct sunlight in an otherwise overcast scene. This was a bit larger than just a hole, but it works well as this Union Pacific passenger special moves from the shade into the sun at the north end of Sedalia on Main 1. The train left with two crews on board. One was a Moffat crew and one was a Joint Line crew. UP crews for the Moffat are based out of Denver, and Joint Line crews are based out of Pueblo. After arriving at Prospect Jct, the train stopped for about 10 minutes and the Moffat crew detrained and the Pueblo crew took over. UP did this to keep the train moving as quickly as possible. UP CEO Jim Vena is on board, so UP is going to keep the train moving! Here, the train is departing Prospect Jct, crossing the South Platte River, and approaching 20th Street. UP deadheaded the train from Grand Junction to Fraser last Sunday. It sat at Fraser until this morning when several VIPs, including UP CEO Jim Vena, boarded the train for a trip to Colorado Springs, CO. The 12-car train arrived in Fraser, CO on Sunday and stayed there until this morning, when some special passengers boarded. Among the passengers is Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena. Under overcast skies, the first revenue run of the Canyon Spirit rolls west of Tunnel 1, headed for Glenwood Springs today. The train departs Denver on Tuesdays and stays overnight in Glenwood Springs. On Wednesdays, it continues to Moab, UT. On Thursdays, it now continues west to Salt Lake City, UT (running over Soldier Summit). Fridays, it starts the return journey and stays in Moab again. Having the unique passenger train is certainly great, but as a railfan that grew up with Rio Grande in the 1980s, seeing class EMD spartan cabs makes me very happy. Now that the train is at Eisele (Clay), the slow order is behind the train, and the engineer has throttled up to speed back up. One thing you might immediately note is that the train has actually be rebranded this year as the Canyon Spirit. The train, which is climbing Big Ten Curve, has expanded its service and is now running from Denver all the way to Salt Lake City (and back), making one round trip every six days.
