In the small town of Bennett, CO, UP's Limon Local charges east onto the Colorado plains. The control tower you see in the distance is not that of Denver Internal Airport, but rather Colorado Air and Space Port, a public airport located less than 9 miles southeast of DIA. The plane almost directly above the control tower is landing at DIA.

A quick roster shot of snoot-nose SD40-2 UP 1837. The longer "snoot-nose" once held extra radio equipment. I don't think it is actually used for anything like that today. Still, looks a little different from most of the other SD40-2s built!

Just east of the east switch of Mesa, UP's Limon Local is leaving CTC behind and has entered into Track Warrant territory. They have a track warrant out to near Deer Trail, CO. That warrant will not get them all the way to Limon. The reason for the warrant only going that far is due to the fact they are following an eastbound coal load which has only made it as far east as Deer Trail.

Okay, it is time to depart! UP 1837, a snoot-nose SD40-2, puts on a bit of an exhaust show as the engineer throttle up to start pulling the (roughly) 40 car Limon Local eastbound on Main 1 toward a green signal. UP 6168 was delivered as SP 139 in April 1995. I was a sophomore in high school at the time, and remember seeing those new scarlet and gray units sometimes when I was getting lunch.

This is an interesting trio of power for the Limon Local. The snoot-nose SD40-2, delivered to Union Pacific March 1978, has had a bit of tagging on it. That stands in sharp contrast to UP 1484, whose paint looks pristine. The paint on UP 6168 doesn't look bad...just a bit dirty.

The conductor on the Limon Local gives a hand signal to the engineer, letting him know to slow as UP 6168 is about to attach to the two units and string of cars in the track. Meanwhile, a utility man starts walking over to offer his assistance to the impending switching moves.

The crew on the Limon Local is currently working to cut away from LTEX 3842, a GP38-2 that is shut off, to be delivered to a new rail park near Bennett, CO. Next, UP 6168 will jump over to the next track to pick up UP 1484 and the string of cars it is attached to.

In addition to the AC4400CW that the crew brought out of North Yard with them, an ex-SP GP40-2 (now a GP40N) and a snoot-nose SD40-2 will provide power for the local. Unlike the last few weeks when I have observed the local, the crew has a utility man (or "U-Man") to help protect shoves and check hand brakes.

Power for the Limon Local passed by the Mid America passenger car (MRLX 1659), which is currently on Track 22 in North Yard. The local is on Track 24, the track that is used on the west side of the yard to move north or south through the yard.

The crew of the Limon Local goes on duty at 12:00 (noon) on Sunday afternoons. After arriving at North Yard and getting some things ready to go, the crew is on UP 6168, which will be the leader for the eastbound local. The train is waiting for the local at Stapleton, doubled over on two tracks. Today, an LTEX GP38-2 joins the train to be delivered at a rail park out near Bennett, CO.

Union Pacific has (or has had) a lot of C44-9Ws in long term storage around the system. UP definitely prefers AC powered units to DC powered units, so they have contracted with Wabtec to rebuild a lot of the older DC units into AC units. UP 9823 is a great example! It was originally CNW 8719, delivered in May 1994. It has now been rebuilt into a C44ACM.

Mid-train swing power from a (rare) eastbound coal load heads south on Track 24 in North Yard, on the way to "the pit" to be serviced for their next assignment. Of note, UP 6219 was originally SP 172, delivered in May 1995.

Yard Shots MRLX, Union Pacific
A close up shot of MRLX 1659 sitting in North Yard. The car was originally built in 1950 by Pullman-Standard for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. The C&O ordered 284 streamlined cars from Pullman-Standard in 1946 (later reduced to 185 cars), and this was part of that order. After the C&O, the car spent time on the rosters of the Seaboard Coast Line, Chicago & North Western, Southern Pacific, and Nacionales de Mexico, before landing on the roster of Mid America Rail Car Leasing. It is rumored that it is now headed for a museum in Illinois.

Yard Shots MRLX, Union Pacific
Earlier in the day, I got a shot of this Mid America Rail Car Leasing (MRLX) passenger car in North Yard. Later in the day, the sun had moved to the west side, so I decided to go back for some better shots. The car is sitting on Track 22, waiting to be taken to North Platte, NE, and eventually, a railroad museum in Illinois.
