The two largest railroads both in the western United States and the United States as a whole. BNSF exercises their trackage rights on the Moffat with a BNSF Denver-Provo manifest which is passing by a loaded UP rail train that is holding on the main. The Denver-Provo is a "key train" today, meaning it is restricted to a maximum speed on the main and restricted to 10 MPH when in the siding and meeting or passing trains. So it is creeping along west here amid an afternoon July storm out on the plains.

It is not too terribly common to find a single unit leading any train. However, that was exactly the case today as an ES44AC leads a long baretable train down the Front Range Sub toward Denver. The train just got permission from the yard to continue past 80th Avenue, a common holding place if the yard cannot take trains.

Interestingly, I happened to get a shot of this exact unit less than three weeks earlier, leading the Provo-Denver over the Moffat!

At the east switch of Leyden, BNSF's Provo-Denver continues east after knocking down an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal. The train will diverge from the Main to Main 2 at Arvada. BNSF 3941 is a Tier-4 compliant ET44C4.

Two days earlier, I saw these exactly same units as DPUs on the Denver-Provo. I shot them at Glenwood and then again at Grand Valley in Parachute. The got to Provo overnight and then departed back east on the Provo-Denver a little later in the day.

As the head end power makes its way through Little Ten Curve near the west end of Rocky, a pair of DPUs (including a KCS ES44AC) makes its way around Big Ten Curve.

As the head end of the Provo-Denver descends down Big Ten Loop toward the west switch of Rocky, the crew can look straight out at their tail end DPU as it comes out of the Eisele (Clay).

An ES44AC, ET44C4, and ES44DC lead the Provo-Denver around Big Ten Loop. I actually shot this exact same consist two days ago when it was heading west toward Provo on the Denver-Provo. It had a quick turn around time in Provo!

The Provo-Denver rounds the bend coming around to the approach to the west switch of Eisele (Clay). If you look, you can just see the first of two DPUs coming out from behind the cut at the bottom of Coal Creek Canyon.

Before starting the 200 mile journey back home, I stuck around at Grand Valley for one last look as KCS 4742 and BNSF 8597 as they bring up the rear of the Denver-Provo. Within 90 minutes or so, the train will reach Grand Junction for a crew change and some switching of cars before continuing on toward Provo.

The Denver-Provo is moving at track speed as it passes by a clear signal at the east switch of Grand Valley. Other than taking the siding to meet Amtrak at Allen (near the east end of Glenwood Canyon), the train has not had to stop since leaving Denver! Indeed, the Zephyr is the only train it has even met. And it will prove to be the only train is meets on the entire journey from Denver to Grand Junction. The crew went on duty at 8:15am in Denver and will easily make it to Grand Junction within the 12 hour limit.

Just west of Lacy, an ES44AC, ET44C4, and ES44DC lead the Denver-Provo west. These three units make for a rather unique trio for the journey.

The entire Denver-Provo is condensed down thanks to the help of a 300mm lense! The train has a clear signal down the main at Lacy, a few miles west of Rifle. In fact, the houses seen in the distance are in Rifle.

Today's Denver-Provo has a bit of a surprise visitor as the first of two DPUs. A Kansas City Southern ES44AC is currently being power shared with BNSF, joined with a BNSF SD70ACe.

The westbound Denver-Provo is on the main track at Glenwood as is passed underneath the signal bridge. Glenwood actually has two siding. The track to the right is the East Siding and the track to the left is the West Siding. The mainline runs down the middle between the two. At the signal bridge, the West Siding ends while the East Siding continues down to the Amtrak Station.
