The westbound Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 1 on a beautiful October morning. The Zephyr is a little more colorful this morning as the "Pepsi Can" P42DC, AMTK 160, is second out on the headend. The scenery is trying to help out as well as fall colors are reaching their peak here along the front range.

AMTK 160 is wearing one of the 50th Anniversary heritage schemes that Amtrak applied in 2021. In this case, the paint scheme adorned is known as the "Pepsi Can" scheme. It was only ever worn by Amtrak's B32-8WH units, mainly in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Demand appears to be down a bit on the Zephyr as this mornings only had six Superliners. Two sleepers, a diner, a sightseer lounge, and two coaches. The train is about 40 minutes late here, just west of Leyden.

The westbound Zephyr wraps its way through Little Ten Curve near the west end of Rocky. A UP coal load on the siding now has a clear (green) signal and is slowly starting to roll east. Near the top of the image, you can see the track at the siding of Eisele (formerly Clay). In the top-right corner of the image, you can see some moved earth around Tunnel 1 for the new Canyon Pines development.

An eastbound UP coal load sits in the siding at Rocky, meeting the westbound Zephyr which rolls by on the main. After the Zephyr passes, the coal load will get a clear (green) signal to continue east to Denver. There, it will get a crew change and continue east on the Limon Sub.

A P42DC and a P40DC lead a 90-minute late Zephyr west through the lush narrows of Barbara's Gulch just east of Rocky. Amtrak has now taken delivery on 15 ALC-42s from Siemens, the first of 110 such units. Over the next few years, the ALCs will replace the P42s and P40s on long distance trains, so shots of P42s and P40s on the Zephyr will become increasing rare.

Four ALC-42s lead a 2 hour late Zephyr at the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. Alas, the light had faded enough that it wasn't quite possible to get a shot without some motion blur visible. The Zephyr has been running on yellow signals since Crescent, following a slow-moving loaded UP oil train.

The eastbound Zephyr has quite a colorful (and new) consist! There is no P42DC to be found. Instead, a quartet of Siemen-built ALC-42s lead the train east. These new units will slowly replace the aging P42DC fleet, at least on long distance trains. The lead unit, AMTK 301, sports a 50th Anniversary celebration scheme. The remaining three units wear the Phase VII scheme, the newest scheme introduced by Amtrak and the official scheme, for the time being, moving forward.

The westbound Zephyr glides through the S-Curve just east of the east switch of Fraser with a rather colorful consist. AMTK 184, the Phase IV heritage unit, leads a standard Phase V P42DC and an ALC-42 (AMTK 301) in the 50th Anniversary scheme. AMTK 301 has been dropped off at various crew change points so crews can learn and get used to the new units that will be replacing Amtrak's aging fleet of P42DCs.

There are few scenes as beautiful as the one seen here, with a fresh layering of snow not only on the ground, but still in the trees, creating that powdered sugar look. A pair of P42DC, including AMTK 130 (Phase I heritage unit) keep the Zephyr rolling west on time just west of Tunnel 1.

On a clear, cold morning after a February blizzard, the westbound Zephyr climbs toward the east portal of Tunnel 1 in a frozen winter wonderland. AMTK 130, the Phase II heritage unit, is second up on the train today. February is generally the coldest month of the year in Colorado and this day is no exception as the temperature is only 2°F (-17°C)!

The morning Zephyr climbs toward Tunnel 1 on a beautiful, albeit blustery, morning. If you look in the background, you might notice a bit of a gash in the hillside in the background. This is part of a new neighborhood, called Canyon Pines, that has just started construction. The neighborhood will include houses up to and even on top of Tunnel 1!
