This is when you know it is cold. Icicles have formed on the outside of the P42DC that will be used on the Winter Park Express this season.

2017 will mark the first regular running of the Ski Train (now called the Winter Park Express) since March 2009! It's been eight years (where does the time go?), but train service to Winter Park is returning. And Amtrak is using one of its last remaining F40PHs for the train. The prime mover has actually been removed from this F40PH, but it still looks good. The train will operate in a push-pull method between Denver and Winter Park (Fraser).

Not too much of a secret what this Amtrak Superliner is going to be used for! The return of the Ski Train! Amtrak is calling it the Winter Park Express. And three of the Superliners have special wrap applied to them.

The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the east end of Plain on its trip west. While getting this shot on this morning, it occurred to me that, within a few more years, this shot will no longer be possible as the trees in the foreground will no doubt grow and obscure the view.

The westbound Zephyr is running about 45 minutes late as it heads west at track speed on the main at Leyden. One of my daughters best friends was on the Zephyr on this day, so we made sure to get track side in order to get a few pictures and hopefully a wave. Which my daughter did get and returned!

On an absolutely beautiful September evening, the eastbound California Zephyr glides east through Barbara's Gulch east of Rocky. The valley is rich with color, highlighted by the last afternoon light of the setting sun.

My least favorite part about moving from summer in to fall and winter is the shortening of the days. It is only 5:30pm and already the tracks at Blue Mountain are just barely still in the sunlight. Another month to six weeks and the only shots you'll be able to get of the eastbound Zephyr east of the Moffat Tunnel will be in darkness!

Right at milepost 37, the eastbound Zephyr accelerates down the main. The train just came through a 10 MPH slow order, which is why the train is now accelerating.

Running just about 15 minutes late, the eastbound California Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the east switch of East Portal. A smattering of aspen trees offer up a great backdrop for the train that, minutes earlier, was in the Moffat Tunnel.

A privately-owned passenger car of New York Central heritage gets a ride on the tail of the westbound California Zephyr. The car is headed for the AAPRCO (American Association of Private Rail Car Owners) conference in Spokane, WA. Several gentlemen offer up some friendly waves as they spot the photographer trackside. Now that is one excellent way to spend a Monday in Colorado in September!

There is still a little early morning mist gripping the ground in the Denver-Metro area. The Denver skyline pokes up out of the top of some of the mist as the westbound Zephyr approaches a clear intermediate signal at Chemical, just west of Leyden.

Running about 20 minutes behind schedule, the westbound California Zephyr is gaining altitude just west of Leyden. The long lens shot shows some of the subtle hills in Arvada, the suburb northwest of Denver. Sunflowers are in full bloom here in mid-September.

Don't ya just hate it when the only shot open to you is one that is perfectly backlit? Such is the case here for the eastbound Zephyr in Granby. But, since I don't get to the west slope all that frequently, I decided it worth including a shot. The Zephyr is just starting to pull after completing its stop at Granby.

The westbound Zephyr is running just a few minutes late as it approaches the east switch at Leyden. The train is moving rather slowly as it is looking at an Approach signal (yellow over red) at Leyden. An eastbound work train is getting in the clear in the siding. By the time the Zephyr can see the west end of Leyden, they will be back on a clear signal.

The lead unit, AMTK 207, is the highest-numbered P42DC on Amtrak's roster!

Two of the last P42DCs received by Amtrak lead up today's westbound Zephyr. The P42s are pulling the train west through Little Ten Curve toward the west switch of Rocky. Meanwhile, an eastbound BNSF manifest has received a clear signal to continue heading east.
