BNSF 5293 seems to be an exception, however. BNSF has applied some orange paint to cover the graffiti, but has not yet had the chance to reapply a BNSF logo to the long hood. A (relatively new) ES44C4 runs on the point of the manifest. These units were, for quite a while, only owned by BNSF. In fact, BNSF now owns over 1,000 such units. For several years now, this train has been largely dominated by tank cars. Thanks to trackage rights...and an operating agreement between BNSF and Utah Railway...a lot of the tank business in the Salt Lake City area goes to BNSF. As it turns out, this is actually UP's MNYRO headed west (away from the camera). The BNSF C44-9W seen here is being borrowed, along with two more on the head end, to assist in the journey to Utah. The train was looking at a red signal at the west end of Irondale. Despite having my scanner turned on, I never did hear why the dispatcher was holding the train west of Irondale. In some instances, the change had to be done rather hastily! Such is the case with the B40-8, formerly in the 8600-series. With very few exceptions, every railroad in the United States, Canada, and Mexico owned at least a few SD40-2s. And now, 40 years later, railroads are still rebuilding them and keeping them on the roster. Granted they are used for switching and local work more often than in mainline service now, but it still cool to see them on the rail. How much longer will that last? The train is approaching a Diverging Approach (red-over-yellow) signal at the west end of Leyden. The BNSF yard in Denver currently has no room for the train, so it will need to hang out in the siding at Leyden for a bit until some space opens up. The day before the last day of February, the City of Denver set a record for the most snowfall in history for the month of February. 22.2" fell this February, which is ironic because ten days earlier, it was shaping up to be one of the driest February's in history. They were granted the rights by the Surface Transportation Board as a part of the condition of the UP/SP merger. They run at least one train each way, each day. The eastbound train, which originates in Provo, UT, frequently descends toward Denver in late morning or early afternoon. The train consisted of a box car and about a half dozen empty center beam flats. Once they hook up and do an air test, they will get a track warrant from the dispatcher and head back to Longmont. There is an interesting grade separation between the main and siding at Broomfield. This is because, at one time, they were actually two separate lines for two separate railroads!
