In January, the sun is low enough in the sky in the mornings that it is hard shooting the Ski Train west of Plainview. On this particular Sunday morning, I went west to East Portal and got the train coming around the bend toward the east switch of the siding.

For the first six runs of the 2006 season, the Ski Train did not have the typical sight of the Kansas bringing up the rear of the train. The Kansas was at Burnham being repainted. By January 14th, the paint job had been completed and the car was back in service looking very sharp!

There is a section of track about 500 feet long in Barbara's Gulch in between Leyden and Rocky that can be seen from Highway 93. On the fourth day of operation in the 2006 season, the Ski Train is making good time through the Gulch on the approach to Rocky.

On the second run of the 2006 season, the Ski Train passes a pasture of horses looking for breakfast just west of Leyden. The horses clearly do not care that any train, let alone the Ski Train, is passing by!

Although there is no snow on the ground in the Denver-Metro area, there are piles of it up at Winter Park. The skiers aboard the first Ski Train of the 2006 winter season should have a great day on the slopes. The train is just 15 miles west of Union Station and the morning sun reflects nicely off the sides of the cars.

On the second Friday run of the season, the lighting is just perfect to capture the westbound Ski Train as it winds through Coal Creek Canyon and climbs towards the east portal of tunnel 1.

Tracks? We don't need any tracks!! The Ski Train leaves Fraser on a clear signal on a siding hidden under freshly fallen snow.

The first run of the 2004-2005 Winter Ski Train wraps through Little Ten Curve on its journey west toward Winter Park. Since the end of the last summer season, the Ski Train now owns the three F40PHs (they were on a lease-to-buy deal with Amtrak) and the units have been re-lettered SKTX (from AMTK).

Looking out the last car of the Ski Train, Winter Park is rapidly fading in the increasing exhaust as the Ski Train enters the Moffat Tunnel.

You could not ask for better lighting as the westbound summer Ski Train is just about to duck into the east portal of tunnel 1.

The specially chartered Ski Train just left the siding of Crescent. Because this train has been chartered, it is heading westbound in the evening. This makes for some outstanding pictures because the train is typically heading away from the sun during its normal runs.

Thanks to a particularly large snow storm in March, the meadow along the tracks at Big Ten Curve are very green!
