Second out in the consist is UP 1996, the Espee Heritage Unit. Here, the train is emerging from Tunnel 1 in low afternoon light with a few coal hoppers at the front of the train. Ever since moving to a thrice-weekly schedule, thanks to COVID, the Zephyr has pretty consistently been running with no baggage car and just six Superliners! The previous Sunday and Monday brought a couple inches of snow an extreme cold temperatures. This morning is a crisp, clear morning. Not a sign of a cloud or, even better, any smoke in the area. However, I was able to do so on a morning following two days of cold and snow! It is only 17°F out as the Zephyr climbs up from Rocky toward Big Ten Curve. Lately, it only seems to run once every 2-4 weeks. When it does run, it rarely has more than three covered hoppers with it. The train will have a straight shot back to North Yard. Other than the local, there were only three other trains that ran on the Moffat. This part of the spur is 8%. This is why, in the past, up to four engines have been on the local when it was longer, back when it was being used to remove things from the old Rocky Flats. The lead units is a recently-repainted ES44AC that is now sporting BNSF's 25th Anniversary paint scheme. The Denver-Provo will end up being one of only four trains to run on the Moffat today. This was thanks to two 10 MPH slow orders along the route. The first was in Barbara's Gulch east of Rocky. The second was around Big Ten Loop. The latter was due to high winds coming off the mountains and on to the plains today. BNSF 6163, a 25th Anniversary unit, leads the train by falls colors here at Blue Mountain. The bridge connects Bond with I-70 at Wolcott via CO-131. There are several deciduous trees and ground foliage in the State Bridge area. Here in early October, they are pretty much in full on fall mode, showing their fantastic colors to passengers on the westbound California Zephyr. With so few trains on the Moffat (meaning minimal meets) and very few slow orders right now, it can be a substantial challenge chasing the Zephyr! This canyon is shorter than Gore Canyon, but the walls of the canyon are a bit more sheer in many places. The tracks skirt the north side of the canyon and Colorado River while US-40 allows cars to run through the canyon on the south side. Here, the Zephyr heads away from the camera on its journey west.
