While this is not the best shot in the world, the point is will conveyed! Six tunnel motors, all wearing black and gold, work hard in the middle of a westbound coal load near the Willow Creek power plant.

A string of SEVEN Grande tunnel motors (SP 5399 was a Grande tunnel motor) are cut into the middle of a westbound coal train coming from CV Spur. The units will assist the train west to the top of Soldier Summit.

This is the way I hope we all remember Grande power. Full light package lashed up on the front of a coal train…..

My favorite tunnel motor on Rio Grande's post-merger roster was DRGW 5355. It will had a complete light package and the horn was located above the cab, not the long hood. Unfortunately, this picture was taken about six month before 5355 was repainted in armor yellow. When it was repainted, the MARS and class lights were removed.

For several years up until early 2000, three or four tunnel motors ran between Ute, CO and Axial, CO as part of a shuttle train of workers. Here, the power for the shuttle train (DRGW 5344, 5354, and 5355) are headed east to Burnham for an inspection.

DRGW 5515 sits near the engine repair facility in North Yard. At the time, 5515 still had more than three years before it would become patched as UP 5109 (and later as UP 9859).

DRGW 5503 came through Denver in June 1998. On this particular day, it was the third unit on the MDVRO (Denver to Roper), which was just getting ready to head north.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Rio Grande, Ski Train
A sunny Saturday in June 1997 found me at the west switch of Leyden (UP Moffat Tunnel Sub). At this point, the Ski Train was still running with the three Rio Grande GP60s (3154, 3155 and UP 5702).

On this afternoon, the train had been specially chartered (I do not recall by whom or for what purpose). The train just met an eastbound coal load and is charging west in the afternoon sun. A hawk (or falcon? I'm not a bird expert!) circles around above the train, appreciating its beauty. Or, you might suggest it is simply looking for a meal...

Down to its last year of life, DRGW 3002 sits in North Yard in Denver, CO while minors repairs are implemented. This (along with DRGW 3003) was the longest-lasting GP30 on the roster, remaining on UP's active roster until retirement on July 30, 1999. DRGW 3002 was also one of only four Rio Grande GP30's to receive the large letter paint scheme (along with 3001, 3014, and 3027).
