When a new (or rare) paint scheme shows up in town, you can bet that it'll draw the attention of railfans! Several such railfans are gathered near the west end of Barr siding to get some pictures of BNSF 6017. It was recently painted and wears a commemorative 25th Anniversary paint scheme. Hard to believe it's been 25 years since BNSF came to be.

It is hard to believe that it has in fact been 25 years since Burlington Northern merged with Santa Fe to created BNSF. That's just a year shy of how long Burlington Northern existed! It was created in 1970 and, of course, became part of BNSF in 1996 with the merger. You can see the BN logo represented on the long hood of the unit, along with Santa Fe and the railroads that merged to make BN in 1970.

Just east of the siding of Barr, a westbound BNSF coal load with a commemorative 25th Anniversary ES44AC on the point approaches. The train will take the siding at Barr to meet two eastbounds.

Finally getting clear of the sharp curves of the mountains, the Provo-Denver exists the east end of Barbara's Gulch. The train will not be able to speed up much, however, as the signal is displaying an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) aspect. The reason being that the train is taking the siding at Leyden to tie down. The crew will be picked up by a van and a relief crew will take the train in to town later in the day.

Okay, at first glance, this may just look like a cool nature shot and you are asking "where the heck is the train"? You have to take out your eagle eyes and look near the left side of the frame, about halfway down from the top. You can see the head end of BNSF's Provo-Denver emerging from Tunnel 7 eastbound! In the distance to the right is the town of Boulder, CO.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of the eastbound Provo-Denver near the west switch of Rocky. A short UP work train waits in the siding, the conductor getting ready to head back in to the cab after giving the BNSF eastbound a rollby.

As AC units have become more and more prevalent in the 21st century, it is less and less common to find solid sets of DC units on manifests. However, a C44-9W and an ES44DC lead the Provo-Denver east out of the siding at Plain on this morning.

An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver rolls east toward a clear signal at the east end of the siding at Plain. The relatively short manifest met the Zephyr here at Plain just minutes ago. Leading the train is one of the earlier C44-9Ws, still in its Heritage 2 scheme.

A pair of pre-preduction ES44DCs, an ES44C4, and an SD40-2 lead BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest at Larkspur with a major summer thunderstorm developing as the backdrop. I assume the SD40-2 is returning to Pueblo after a 92-day inspection in Denver. The unit was online and loading, which was somewhat unexpected, but cool to see (and hear) nonetheless.
