A single car is stopped at the 72nd Avenue grade crossing in Arvada, just east of Leyden. This grade crossing will no longer be here in roughly two years when the City of Arvada widens 72nd Avenue to four lanes and drops the road beneath the tracks here. For now, however, an eastbound BNSF coal load crosses the road at grade, as thousands of trains before it have done.

The head end of this BNSF coal load has entered the main at Rocky as a pair of DPUs bring the tail end around the northeast edge of Big Ten Curve. The train met the BNSF Denver-Provo at Rollins earlier in the afternoon.

Thanks to the short days of winter, it is only noon and yet already feels like the sun is getting close to the western horizon! A loaded BNSF coal train leaves out of the east end of Eisele (Clay) on the approach to Big Ten.

A single C44-9W brings up the tail end of the Provo-Denver. As you can see, the unit is facing in to the train, so this shot from above the train looking at the unit seemed appropriate.

This eastbound BNSF manifest is on the roll after a meet at Leyden, about a mile to the west. Here, the train is crossing Simms Street in Arvada. Simms Street, as with most of the grade crossing in Arvada, is now a quiet zone, meaning trains do not use their horns (unless someone is in the way).

After meeting the morning westbound Zephyr at Leyden, this BNSF Provo-Denver is rolling east out of the siding toward Denver. The train may have to wait at Tennyson Street or possibly Utah Junction for a bit due to "several moves" that the dispatcher is setting up at Utah Jct. Fortunately, the crew can remain on duty until 12:01pm.

With so few trains running on the Moffat these days, catching a meet anywhere is always nice. Leyden used to see multiple meets every day. Here on November 5, this is only the third meet at Leyden in the last five days, since the start of the month. The westbound Zephyr is meeting the eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver.

BNSF 6163 leads a pair of SD70ACes on the climb west up the grade from Coal Creek Canyon to the east portal of Tunnel 1. The lead units is a recently-repainted ES44AC that is now sporting BNSF's 25th Anniversary paint scheme. The Denver-Provo will end up being one of only four trains to run on the Moffat today. With Amtrak's move to thrice weekly on long distance trains, the Zephyr does not run on the Moffat at all on Mondays.

It took today's Denver-Provo 40 minutes to cover the ten miles from the west end of Leyden to Blue Mountain. This was thanks to two 10 MPH slow orders along the route. The first was in Barbara's Gulch east of Rocky. The second was around Big Ten Loop. The latter was due to high winds coming off the mountains and on to the plains today. BNSF 6163, a 25th Anniversary unit, leads the train by falls colors here at Blue Mountain.

After stopping briefly at Leyden to check on something in the consist, BNSF 6163 is now heading west. The lead unit is one of ten specially painted units honoring the 25th Anniversary of BNSF. I've been fortunate to catch two of these units leading now!

If you are a follower of the site, then you likely know that coal trains - once the most common type of train on the Moffat - have become rather scarce. So it was extra special when BNSF ran a coal empty west up and around Big Ten on this September afternoon. All six units are on the head end for the trip west.
