When coal trains were "a dime a dozen" on the Moffat, you could almost always count on finding at least one, if not two, coal trains here on Main 1 and Main 2. The Pecos Street crossover was built to allow the mid-train helpers to be easily cut out of the coal loads. The last Superliner crosses over the Belt Industrial Lead, which leads to the Greeley Subdivision. The Zephyr is on the main, and the North Yard siding is now to the left of the train. The Zephyr, just two miles west of Denver Union Station, has UP's North Yard on its left (right side of the picture) and BNSF's Denver intermodal yard, Rennicks, on its right (left side of the picture). A slew of JB Hunt trailers, among others, wait to either be loaded on a train, or picked up by a truck to proceed to their destinations. The track the Zephyr is on is the only track that is signaled and has CTC (and PTC) in this shot. All the other tracks are in "yard limits" and are not signaled. The crew of the train is actually tying the train down on Main 1. The SUV to the right will take the crew back to the yard office. Typically, southbounds are tied down in the siding known as Hogan's Alley. However, as you can see, there is already a train tied down there. So, for the time being, Main 2 will the only track open in either direction between Walnut Street and South Denver. In the distance, Longs Peak stands tall at 14,259 feet above sea level. Granted there are only four destinations for road freights that North Yard has to contend with these days: Pueblo to the south, North Platte, NE to the east, and Grand Junction to the west, and Green River, WY to the west. It has over 35 yard tracks in several places as well as a full car repair facility. The south side of the yard (far left in this frame) has three tracks under CTC control. In fact, UP 1357 started as DRGW 3102 when it was delivered in April 1972. UPY 691 started out in deep blue as MP 1691 in February 1982. UPY 691 has certainly seen better days! This particular GP40-2 is no stranger to Denver as it started life at DRGW 3102. On June 3, 1997, it absorbed in to UP's roster as UP 5256. About six years later, on September 30, 2003, it found its new home on the roster as UP 1357. Nearly twenty years later, that's the number it still owns.
