This eastbound BNSF manifest passes by the hot box detector at MP 22.6. As implied in the name, a hot box detector measures heat along the axles of the passing train. If a brake shoe is sticking against a wheel, it will (naturally) generate large amounts of heat. This will be detected and the information will be broadcast over the radio to the crew of the train, giving the exact location of the problem including axle number and rail (north or south, in this case). Fortunately, there were no issues for this train.

I got myself in to a predicament at Crescent on this Sunday afternoon. I knew the BNSF manifest (in the foreground) would be taking the siding. However, I thought that it would be short enough to fit east of the grade crossing. Unfortunately, that turned out not to be the case. The train came to a stop on the grade crossing, preventing me from getting to the other side of the tracks to shoot and westbound. Since I couldn't get over there, I decided to make lemonade out of lemons and get a blurred shot of the westbound between tank cars at the grade crossing.

After getting held up for over an hour at Cliff, this eastbound BNSF manifest is once again headed into the siding, this time at Crescent. The clouds have broken up enough to offer some nice lighting on the scenery in the distance. The train will ultimately wind up blocking the grade crossing for about 15 minutes while waiting for the westbound UP coal empty it is meeting to come by.

The conductor for the eastbound BNSF manifest in the siding (on the left) is on the ground right at milepost 37. He gives a wave up to the conductor for the westbound BNSF manifest on the main. This train had some engine problems and the conductor had to walk back to the DPUs. After getting the issue resolved, he simply rode in the DPU up to Cliff where a track maintainer was waiting to give him a ride back up to the head end.

Ironically, when I decided to head west for the Moffat on this day, I was actually hoping to see some UP action! I should have known that, instead, I would find BNSF trains running in both directions. After stalling out (due to engine issues) at Crescent, the westbound on the main has finally made it to Cliff. Its counterpart sits in the siding, waiting for him to clear.

Hurry up and wait! You can frequently hear that said when it comes to trains. The day after the 4th of July in 2015 was no exception on the Moffat. This eastbound BNSF manifest has been waiting in the siding at Cliff for nearly an hour. It is waiting on its counterpart, which encountered some engine problems and stalled out at Crescent. The track (out of focus) in the foreground in the Cliff House Track, which has a noticeable grade down to prevent cars from rolling out on to the siding.

Six GEs (of varying model) lead BNSF's Cheyenne to Denver manifest. The train is stopped about 2,500 feet north of the north switch of Broomfield. The train is waiting for a lone GP39-3 to get in the clear. Once it is in the clear, the dispatcher will give the Cheyenne-Denver a track warrant with a "Box 4", which will allow it to perform some work. Specifically, two of the C44-9Ws on the train (the 4th and 5th units) are to be set out at Broomfield to work on a maintenance train. Once complete, the train will receive a new warrant and continue the rest of the way in to Denver.

A single GP39-3 proceeds north on the mainline (away from the photographer) at Broomfield. If you look in the distance (near the right side of the frame), you'll notice the headlights of a southbound. Not to worry though. The southbound has a track warrant that doesn't take it any further than where it is at. Same goes for the light engine. The light engine will stop north of the switch at North Broomfield and back on the maintenance of way cars in the siding on the right.

There are folks out there that do not care for roster shots...and I understand why. Personally, I don't mind them so long as that isn't the only type of picture you are looking at in a photo update. I actually like checking out roster shots from various railroads / models / paint schemes from year ago. Perhaps this little BNSF GP39-3 (rebuilt from a GP35) will be a nice catch for someone out there.
