Moffat Tunnel (UP) Winter Park Express
The Winter Park Express is about five minutes late after briefly getting held up at Utah Jct. It is just east of the grade crossing at Kipling Street in Arvada, and the overcast skies still reflect some great colors about 10 minutes after sunrise.

There is plenty of snow to be had on the ground (and hanging in the trees) in the Tunnel District as the westbound Winter Park Express heads toward the east portal of Tunnel 8. Not far behind the train, you can clearly see the west portal of Tunnel 7.

Amtrak's short Winter Park Express Ski Train passes through a very wintery scene on the main track at Plain, just east of Rainbow Cut. There are 266 passengers on board the train this morning, ready for a fun day on the slopes at Winter Park.

Since last weekend, both P42DCs of the Winter Park Express were changed out. AMTK 142 and 192 were in charge of the five car train last weekend. This morning, AMTK 153 and 27 are running on the Ski Train. It is a bit late (due to a mechanical issue), but is now charging west through the OS at East Leyden.

Amtrak added two holiday runs for the Winter Park Express this year. Today, MLK Day, is the first "bonus" day for the Ski Train. It is -7°F (-22°C) and the snow is falling as the train approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. The orange object on the front of AMTK 192 is actually a protective cover that goes over the coupler. It prevents snow and ice from building up in the knuckle, making it easier when AMTK 192 has to be attached to the train in Fraser after running around it for the trip back to Denver.

When Amtrak started running the Winter Park Express again a few years ago, they seemed to make an effort to include a specially-painted (heritage) unit on the train. Not the case this year, as AMTK 142 and AMTK 192 lead the train west, just west of Tunnel 1.

The sun is just barely peeking out from clouds to the east as the westbound Winter Park Express crosses 80th Avenue, just east of the east switch of Leyden. The train is kicked up a bit of snow on this extremely frigid January morning. The temperature this morning is a bone chilling -10°F (-23°C)!

A year from now, if the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) runs in 2025, there will very likely be houses in the background in this shot. For the first run in 2024, however, there is only asphalt and a few construction vehicles behind the westbound Ski Train on the main at Plain.
