Moffat Tunnel (UP) Norfolk Southern, BNSF
Another BNSF oil empty that originated on Norfolk Southern east of the Mississippi. This is why so many NS units are showing up on the Moffat lately. The four additional BNSF units were added to the train in Denver. Once loaded, the train will likely return east over the Moffat in a 3x3 configuration.

I am not going to lie, I really enjoy seeing a unit sporting Norfolk Southern paint alone on the Moffat. The predominantly black scheme is closer to Rio Grande than any other Class 1 railroad here in 2025. The unit is a DPU on an eastbound coal empty.

NS 4040, an AC44C6M, sits as the sole DPU on the tail end of this eastbound coal empty in the siding at Rocky. The unit was rebuilt from an AC4400CW by Norfolk Southern.

An MRL SD70ACe, now owned by BNSF, sits as the second unit on an eastbound coal empty. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that an MRL unit will ever lead on a train in Colorado, as the MRL units are not equipped with PTC. MRL never installed PTC on its mainlines. The units will likely eventually get PTC installed, but that will likely happen at the same time as a repaint into standard BNSF colors.

I thought BNSF 2697 was a bit of an interesting unit, sitting near the BNSF Engine House. The unit is clearly a former GP35, as you can see where the smaller center radiator fan once existed at the back of the long hood. It has since been rebuilt as a GP39-3.

Near Rennicks Yard, a BNSF GP60 and a GP39-2 sit attached to a handful of cars that need to be switched out at local industries. It's been awhile since I've seen a GP60, so I was very happy to come across this guy.

A ballast regulator works on the BNSF Brush Sub while a bulldozer pours out some ballast on the Market Street turnout, which was replaced along with the diamond. The work was done on a Sunday as a BNSF switch job works on the industries that the turnout accesses the rest of the week.

BNSF put in place a substantial track curfew at Sand Creek so the diamond could be replaced. It was indeed replaced earlier in the day, and crews are now working to place fresh ballast to complete the work. The curfew actually necessitated the morning Zephyr being delayed by four hours, so it departed Chicago the day before four hours late, running at #1005 (instead of #5), with the entire schedule being delayed by four hours.

As a bulldozer dumps ballast along UP's Greeley Sub at the diamond at Sand Creek, two ballast regulators wait to smooth out the ballast. The regulator on the left is on BNSF's Brush Sub. The regulator on the right is on UP's Greeley Sub. You can also see a track tamper on the far side on the Brush Sub.

BNSF 8523 and two GEs work to pull an empty oil train up and around Big Ten Curve. BNSF frequently runs oil trains with six units on the head end, so the power is present to run eastbound (on the oil load) in a 3x3 configuration. However, these three units are the only units on this westbound. BNSF will be getting three additional units from somewhere else when the train is ready to head east.
